The Ragdoll was developed in the '60 in the USA (Riverside, California). The
story begins with a car-accident of a pregnant white Angora-kind cat named Josephine.
She recovered completely of the car-accident and her kittens were very special:
they were very sweet and attached. As for real this can not be true because you can not change a cats behaviour, Ann Baker used a selection method to breed with the cats which were correct temparament and looks! And they had a sweet character with large,
not burring semi-long hair and blue eyes. To came to the Ragdoll of today they
used, according to serveral sources, different kind of other sweet cats. But
on the world there are many other stories about the Ragdoll ....
The Ragdoll will completely relax when you pick them up, because they feel themselves save and trust you. Ann Baker (see picture) was the breeder and she wanted to keep this breed for herself to make a lot of money with it. A few of her customers (Danny and Laura Dayton) could prevent this and so the Ragdoll became well know in whole the USA. In the year 1965 it became an official breed in the USA.
In the '90 became the Ragdoll know in the Netherlands. It was then not official recognised, because there came more and more Ragdoll to shows, is it also in the Netherlands a official breed. Nowadays the breeders buy new bloodlines from the USA to prevent in breeding.
The Ragdoll is a huge powerfull cat with a semi-long hair coat, which will mostly not tangle. The back legs are standing higher then the front legs, this results to a run-down backline. The tail is well hairy and has a good length with regard to the body. The middle big head is wellshaped with big oval blue eyes, good and solid chin and well shaped cheeks. The legs are middle big and very strong with round feets.
Adult male-Ragdolls will weigh from 6 to 8 kilogramme (9 kilogramme is not an exception), the females weigh between 1 and 2 kilogramme lighter.
The Ragdoll varities are: Point, Mitted, Bi-colour and since shortly also Torty and Tabby. These are common in the colours blue, lilac, seal, chocolate, flame, red and creme. This first few weeks are very important, they need a lot of attention, it reflex itself on their future life. After 13 weeks the time is arrived to leave the mother. And after three years the Ragdoll is truly grown up and has it the true colour.
The character of the Ragdoll is too sweet to leave alone outside your own house. A strange person could the cat simply take to another home. They have the ability to adapt themselves very easy to a new home. The Ragdoll has also some kind of puppy-behaviour, they follow you where-ever you go and apport occasionally. The Ragdoll is interested in everything you are doing and would go into every hole or cupboard, they are very curious! Ragdoll can live with different other animals and if there will occur some danger, the Ragdoll will simply go away. They has no need to demolish furniture, etc. A piece of paper is a great toy to play with for a serveral hours.
